Environment

Part 3 of 6

Overview

Plants are not just an element of home decor. They are living, breathing accessories, so their environment is important.

  • Temperature: Tropical plant growth will stunt below 58 degrees & take damage below 55 degrees.
  • Drafts: Be mindful of open windows and doors during peak seasons (really cold & hot temperatures).
  • Dust/Debris: Cleaning leaves helps chlorophyll to be exposed to light in order to absorb it sufficiently. You can use white distilled vinegar or lemon juice diluted in water which helps to keep leaves shiny and remove mineral deposits. You can also dry wipe dust off with a microfiber towel. Neem oil can also work, but don’t use leaf shiners since they can be oily and clog the pores.
  • Humidity: Consider adding a humidifier. Misting only localizes humidity for short period of time it’s really not as effective as using a humidifier. Plant grouping, terrariums, and glass domes can be used to create higher humidity around plants.
