Potted plants dry out quickly and require daily watering, or even twice-daily checks, during peak summer heat.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth. Tolerates partial shade, but too much shade leads to sparser foliage growth, thin branching, and a looser overall canopy structure.

Thuja varieties thrive in moderate to high humidity environments, making them adaptable across humid temperate zones, northern landscapes, southeastern regions, and coastal areas.

How far apart should you plant Thuja varieties for a privacy screen?
Spacing depends on the variety's mature height and width. Large varieties like the Green Giant Arborvitae (Thuja plicata) should be planted 5–6 feet apart for a tight screen, or 8–10 feet apart for a natural row, while medium varieties like the Emerald Green Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) can be planted 2–3 feet apart on center for a narrow screen or border hedge.
Why is my Arborvitae browning on the inside?
Inner foliage browning in late summer and autumn is a natural seasonal shedding process, often called "autumn needle drop". As outer branches thicken, old inner needles receive less light, turn bronze or brown, and drop off naturally. However, if browning starts at the outer branch tips or affects entire sections, it usually indicates drought stress, spider mites, or fungal blight.
